This year's 7th Annual Waimanalo Community Clean-up was an incredibly successful event! Straying from the format of past years' events, this year we focused volunteer efforts solely on cleaning up litter and illegal dump-sites from multiple roads and parks throughout the community.

Over 80 volunteers from Hawai'i Job Corps, Hawai'i Technology Institute, Target and many community members turned out to clean more than 7 miles of roads and the District Park itself. Youth from Hui Malama O Ke Kai led the street clean-up efforts by surveying Waimanalo to find the areas most in need of a helping hand. They organized their families to clean a stretch of Waikupanaha Street and beautify the area with native kupukupu ferns donated from a local nursery and hand painted signs to bring awareness to the day's efforts.

Event partner 808 Cleanups supplied the volunteers with gloves, trash bags, buckets and tongs to make the efforts easier.  Support trucks followed along and loaded the bagged trash and bulk items to be transported back to the disposal bins at the park.

We collected over 4000 pounds of bagged rubbish in under four hours and that doesn't event include any of the scrap metal or bulky items like mattresses, couches and to 50 tires that were collected!

We would like to extend a sincere Mahalo nui loa to Keneke's Waimanalo and Timmy T's Gourmet Grinders who supplied lunches to feed every one of our volunteers. Mahalo to Pioneer and Aloha Trucking for providing the roll-off bins and to Road Safety Services and Designs for donating the parking barricades which ensured we had room to operate the event. Mahalo also to the Waimanalo residents, the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board ad Waimanalo Agricultural Association for continuing to support this yearly event.
