Waihe'e Fish Passage Project Wrap-up

Throughout 2012 and 2013 Hui o Ko'olaupoko had the privilege of working with other partner organizations to address a project in the Waihe'e ahupua'a.  The Waihe'e Fish Passage Project worked to modify an antiquated stream gauging station to allow upstream migration of native aquatic species in a way that will exclude non-native aquatic species and repair other failing aspects of the structure. The structure, built in 1935, had become undercut and posed a barrier for upstream migration of endemic and native aquatic species.

In August 2012, project work began to repair the front of the structure and build a rock face up one side of the overhang, creating a slow, steady flow of water favorable for O'opu migration.  Additional work to repair other aspects of the structure and expand the rock face took place in Summer 2013 with the help of community volunteers.

Funders and partners for this project include U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,  Hawaii Fish Habitat Partnership, Hui o Ko'olaupoko, KEY Project,  Honolulu Board of Water Supply, USGS, State of Hawaii: Department of Aquatic Resources.  Collectively, these groups have formed the Waihe'e Ahupua'a Initiative (WAI).

Hui o Ko‘olaupoko (HOK) is partnering with O‘ahu Resource Conservation and Development Council and the Waimanalo community, along with various recycling companies, to host the fifth annual community-based recycling day for Waimanalo residents onJanuary 11, 2014 From 09:00 AM to 01:00 PM .

At this event, community members have the opportunity to recycle cell phones, computers, batteries, tires, scrap metal and many other items.  We also offer curbside pick-up of bulky items within Waimanalo and free towing of unwanted vehicles. Recycling these items reduces the amount of trash going to landfills and helps to protect local streams and Waimanalo Bay from harmful pollutants.

An event of this size could not be accomplished without support from individuals and businesses in the community.  We are recruiting more than 50 community volunteers to help unload and sort the recyclables, drive trucks for curbside pickup, direct the flow of vehicles in and out of Waimanalo Beach Park and organize street & stream clean-up teams.  These volunteers will dedicate more than 150 volunteer hours to keep Waimanalo clean and green.  Volunteers can sign up for one of 2 shifts 8am-11am or 11am-2 pm.  All volunteers   will be rewarded with a hearty local lunch provided by Sweet Home Waimanalo.

Please contact Kristen Nalani Mailheau at nalani@huihawaii.org or 381-7202 for more details or to RSVP.

Throughout the past four years, the Waimanalo Community Recycling Day has been an enormous success.  The following is a brief summary of the previous years’ successes:

400 volunteers engaged in the cleanup and recycling of items
1200 volunteer hours committed to keeping Waimanalo clean and green
6 roll-off bins of scrap metal
9 roll-off bins of bulky trash items
23 pallets of computers & electronics
4 truckloads of clothing donated to Goodwill
Over 400 tires recycled and kept out of the landfill.

Join us at the upcoming event to do your part in keeping Waimanalo clean and green!

January 11, 2014 From 08:00 AM to 02:00 PM
Waimanalo Beach Park 41-741 Kalanianaole Hwy.
