Ecosystem Restoration

Due to human interaction and various environmental changes overtime, the island environment and native ecosystem have been significantly altered over the course of time.  Impacts include but are not limited to:
  •  Invasive plants and animals dominate our forests and cityscapes;
  • Altered stream paths through development of dams, diversions, channelization, and flood mitigation projects;
  • Eroding stream banks;
  • Impacts from livestock grazing and agricultural practices;
  • Impairment of aquatic species migration, and more.

All of these activities cumulatively impact water quality along all reaches of the stream.  Most of Hui o Ko'olaupoko projects focus on riparian restoration to counteract these negative impacts on the natural environments of our local communities. HOK works with various landowners and agencies within Ko'olaupoko to restore the land back to its native ecosystem.

Watershed restoration activities include:
  • Fencing to keep out nuisance animals
  • Land clearing and weeding for invasive plant species removal
  • Replanting native vegetation
  • Erosion control practices
