Celebrating Forests & Livelihoods

​March may not be the month that comes to mind when international celebrations of Earth are mentioned. But March plays host to World Wildlife Day March 3rd, International Day of Forests March 21st, World Water Day March 22nd,World Meteorological Day March 23rd, Earth Hour March 27th 8:30pm-9:30pm, and a few others I'm sure I missed!
 
This year, World Wildlife Day will be celebrated under the theme "Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet". This will highlight the central role that forests, forest species and ecosystems service in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally, and particularly of Indigenous and local communities with historic ties to forested and forest-adjacent areas.
 
Coincidentally, this year the International Day of Forests promotes the theme "Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being". It underscores the importance of education at all levels in achieving sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation. Healthy forests mean healthy, resilient communities and prosperous economies.

​In addition to all of those earthy celebrations, March 8th is International Women's Day! As a team currently consisting of six women, (some in the field and some playing vital roles in the office), Hui o Ko'olaupoko staff are driven by a passion for the environment and helping our communities create meaningful connections to the living world around them.
