Windward Mall Low Impact Retrofit

Hui o Koolaupoko partnered with Roth Ecological Design Int. and EcoSolutions LLC to design-build three rain gardens to capture, treat and recharge stormwater from select parking lot locations around Windward Mall owned by Kamehameha Schools, Bishop Estate.  This Low Impact Retrofit (LIR) is designed to capture storm water run-off from over 18,000 square feet of impervious surface from the roof, road and parking lots.  The rain gardens will trap and infiltrate the storm water run-off before it has a chance to carry pollutants into nearby Kea'ahala Stream and Kāne'ohe Bay.

Construction of the site began in September, 2015 with a site blessing, excavation and formation of the rain garden basins and berms and planting of native species with the help of over twenty community members. 

Long term maintenance of the project will be conducted by Windward Mall.
