The He'eia Estuary Restoration Project, located on He'eia State Park (currently managed by Kama 'āina Kids), will take place at the mouth of He'eia Stream in an five acre area dominated by non-native species including mangrove and hau bush where both species have encroached on the stream corridor, making it nearly impassable. This project continues our efforts from the original project at the top of He'eia stream in Ha'iku, now down to the base at the estuary mouth.
Invasive species removal work at the He'eia Estuary Restoration Project began in April 2015 with the removed of material which was later chipped and composted on site or repurposed into wood for planters and hale material. Replacement of native plant species aid in erosion control, filtration of storm water runoff, and provide habitat for native species. We have removed roughly 4 acres of invasive mangrove and plan to finish the last acre early 2019!

Windward Community College Low Impact Retro-fit![]() HOK and Windward Community College (WCC) have partnered to install approximately 3,000 square feet of rain gardens and native vegetation in front of Hale 'Imiloa to capture storm water run-off from over 18,000 square feet of impervious surface from the roof, road, and parking lots. The rain gardens will trap and infiltrate the storm water runoff before it has a chance to carry pollutants into nearby Kea'ahala Stream and Kāne'ohe Bay. Volunteers help to remove weeds and invasive species from the site as well as prune native vegetation, maintain the structural integrity of the downspouts and water collection basins, learn about the importance of capturing and infiltrating storm water to prevent pollution, and see how these practices can be applied at home, see details here.

Native Plant Foster Parent Program![]() The Hui o Ko'olaupoko Native Plant Foster Parent Program was started in the summer of 2010 to facilitate propagation of Hawaiian plant species which are vital tools for improving water quality. Program volunteers foster native plants in exchange for education on plant care, propagation, and natural pest control techniques. In return, program volunteers receive a portion of the mature plants for landscaping at their home. In 2010, 11 foster parent groups raised nearly 300 plants. These groups include elementary schools, families and individuals. The foster program is beneficial to current and future project/ demonstration areas and out planting sites such as Kaha Garden and the Popoi'a Storm Water Retrofit to expand the variety of species and to replace damaged, aged, or diseased plants.

Windward Youth Leadership Fund![]() The Windward Youth Leadership Fund (WYLF) is an alternative way to raise funds for your activities while helping to strengthen our community. Rather than think about what you can sell, the WYLF challenges you to think about what you can give. Though the WYLF, youth can apply for and earn up to $5000 for their club or group activities by doing something positive for the watersheds in Windward O'ahu. The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has partnered with Hui o Ko'olaupoko to provide this opportunity.
Here are a few videos created by previous WYLF Grant recipients about their projects with Hui o Ko'olaupoko at our various project sites.
