Water Quality Snapshot Days

Water Quality Snapshot Days were created as a tool to promote environmental awareness and to help citizens gain first-hand experience in assessing the health of their local watershed.  Participants are instructed on proper monitoring techniques and are taught to use various types of water quality monitoring equipment. Data collected at the event can be used to create a base line for local water quality as well as be compared to past events across the State. Results from the snapshot days are complied and sent out to participants with an explanation of the findings.

An easy-to-use test kit will enable everyone regardless of age or experience to sample for a core set of water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH (acidity), and turbidity (clarity). Participants will also learn about ways to improve water quality on their own property.

Upcoming Water Quality Snapshot Days:

February 25th at Kualoa Beach Park: 9-11a.m.

March 3rd at He'eia State Park: 9-11a.m.

View the event flyer here.

Windward Youth Leadership Fund: The Windward Youth Leadership Fund (WYLF) is an alternative way to raise funds for your activities while helping to strengthen our community. Rather than think about what you can sell, the WYLF challenges you to think about what you can give. Though the WYLF, youth can apply for and "earn" up to $5000 for their club or group activities by doing something positive for the watersheds in Windward O'ahu. The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has partnered with Hui o Ko'olaupoko to provide this opportunity. Before you apply please contact a Hui o Ko'olaupoko representative to discuss your project ideas.

The third annual Waimanalo Community Recycling Day, held on January 7 2012 was a huge success. Nearly 100 volunteers and community members helped to recycle 1000 LBS of newspaper, magazines and phone books, 2 roll-off bins of scrap metal, a truck full of appliances, 8 pallets stacked with e-waste ant TVs, 200 tires and a truck full of items for Goodwill. 3 roll-off bins of trash and bulky items were also removed from the watershed. Mahalo to all of our sponsors, partners, volunteers and community supporters who are committed to keeping Waimanalo clean & green!
